Papa Pronto

Witkoppen

We took a ride out to Indaba Hotel this morning to make guest arrangements for our wine tasting tour. Then it was back on the bike to go for our morning breakfast run. Today we chose Papa Pronto because we have driven past it 1,000 times on Witkoppen Road and have never stopped here. Well today was going to be our first visit and boy were we impressed.

Right from the staff waiting at the front door to greet us, to the waiters and other staff in the restaurant, all were friendly, helpful and attentive. The restaurant has 3 levels, a ground floor, mezzanine floor and top floor which has a large outside seating area. We sat in the mezzanine level as it was too hot to sit upstairs under the umbrellas. We had a ceiling fan directly above us and it was cool and it had a view from this floor too from the outside balcony.

I ordered a bacon, avo and feta tramezzini and Heather ordered a Halloumi salad and we had a dirty Chai coffee with our food. It was fresh, delicious and well prepared. Absolutely a great experience and one we would definitely want to come back to and try again. Another customer next to us had a pizza and that looked delicious too, thin base pizza which looked amazing.

Croft & Co

Parkview

We took a ride out to Safari Outdoor in Rivonia this past weekend for our monthly handgun shoot. Heather has improved her grip and is shooting much better now than before. At short range (5m) she is hitting in the bull. A great morning at the range, then it was off to Parkview for breakfast.

We tried Croft & Co and were blown away by the professional and fast friendly service. It is clear that the owners are hands on involved in the daily running of the restaurant. Coming around and chatting to customers. It was great to see and be seen, well done on an unusual experience. Normally everyone is just focused on themselves and not the customer.

The breakfast was delicious and well priced too, all round a great morning out. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a great place to chill for Breakfast or lunch or a romantic dinner.

Northcliff Boutique Hotel

Northcliff

We took a long ride out of town on the GS this morning to just get out in the fresh Gauteng air. We just cruised around Harties dam and then did a big circle back to town. We heard about Northcliff Boutique Hotel from my daughter and decided to give it a try. Set high up on the Northcliff hill it overlooks the entire West Rand. It is absolutely beautiful to see all the trees amongst the houses and the Jacaranda trees spotted around with a dash of purple.

It is said that Johannesburg is the city with the most trees, making it one of the largest man made forests in the world. You can see Clearwater Mall to the left, the Krugersdorp mountains in the background and Randpark High School on the right.

We ordered drinks and a cheese platter board, sitting at the table gives you an amazing view over the West Rand. I am sure dinners must be absolutely amazing with all the lights of the city below. Something to behold. Bookings are essential as they will not let you in without a booking. A lovely venue for a romantic dinner for two.

Our experience of the service was a bit disappointing as there was only one waitress on duty and she took more than 10 minutes to bring the drinks. We were the only couple in the restaurant at the time, so it would have been acceptable if she was busy, but with no one else there, one was wondering what took so long? Unfortunately after ordering the cheese platter things did not get any better. To put 6 pieces of cheese, 4 crackers and a few grapes took half an hour. Disappointed but I am sure this was a once off and not the norm. My daughters experience was completely different and they thoroughly enjoyed their dinner and service.

Proud Mary

Rosebank

We took a ride through to Centurion this morning for our monthly shoot. Now that I have been issued my gun license we are just waiting on Heathers license to be be issued, so we can carry. We are shooting more accurate and we even learnt how to handle a stove pipe. Where the bullet does not load into the chamber correctly and needs to be removed.

Then it was time to get back on the road and head down the N1 and onto the M1 to Rosebank. Traffic was not bad at all and we could cruise the highway at 120km/hr. I love riding with Heather as we can chat to each other and enjoy the ride and the scenery.

When we arrived in Rosebank I was not 100% sure where the restaurant was, but just went to central Rosebank where all the restaurants are located. It is directly opposite Starbucks in the reception area of the Voco Hotel.

What an amazing restaurant! We were blown away by the friendly staff, waiting to open the door for us, our waiter Antonio was superb. The decor and ambiance in the restaurant was unique and inviting. Lots to look at and admire, and the food was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed this one and will definitely be back for another visit. MID-CENTURY, MODERN DESIGN MEETS CONTEMPORARY CONVIVIALITY AT JOZI’S LATEST HOTSPOT

Even the toilets had marble walls and black toilets to match with beautiful gold wallpaper and tiles. I wanted to take a picture, but thought it inappropriate to be showing toilets on a food blog… but everything was so clean and new. Absolutely stunning venue.

Rustic Vine

Linden

We had to do some shopping in the morning and then took a drive to Linden for breakfast. We were not sure where to go and would see when we get there. This is what we do sometimes, so it is unplanned and a surprise for both of us. Those who know me, know that this is not how I normally do this. I normally have everything planned beforehand and check out the place and menu before so I know exactly what we are doing and where we are going.

Never the less, we drove down 4th and saw this place which seemed to have a lot more going on than just a restaurant. We pulled up into the parking and checked it out. They have various little craft arty type stalls like, Lemon Berry soap and candles, the cake company, Adelheim Collectables, Rustic Vine restaurant and Gotcha pizzeria. The restaurant also offers what seems to be art class while you eat, as they were setting up a table for 6 with these small canvases and paint palettes for each person. Something unusual and creative.

Nice background music was playing and the owner was very involved in the running of the restaurant, which is always great to see. Staff were friendly and helpful and service was great. The food was fresh and delicious and it was well presented. Overall a great experience and not sorry we tried something new.

After breakfast, we took a drive to Creek 9 Mashie course, but it was so full and busy, we decided to go to the Ruimsig Mashie course. There was no one there, we were the only ones on the course, but as we tee’d off a few other people came too. So it was a great afternoon spent on the Mashie course, Heathers first time and she shot a round of 43. It was a lot of fun, and we will definitely be doing this again sometime soon.

Pecanwood Country Club

Hartebeespoort

We took a ride through to Pecanwood this morning, it was a beautiful, nice sunny morning. We had to check in at the main gate and got an entry code from the Club House. We took a ride through the estate and had a look at all the beautiful houses, gardens, golf greens and water features. All gardens are well groomed, manicured and well kept, it is really a well run estate.

We stopped at the Club House for breakfast and it was a beautiful setting with the 18th hole to the right and the 9th hole to the left, with the driving range between the two. It is beautiful and green and the view is spectacular.

The main restaurant has glass windows all the way around giving you a great view of the greens. There is also outside seating areas and a bar area to just chill at. We ordered breakfast and sat outside under the umbrellas. The waiters were friendly and attentive and the food was fresh and tasty.

After breakfast we took a ride through the estate down to the Boat House, where they have another smaller restaurant alongside the dam. It looks like a great place to chill and watch some sport on the big screen TV’s. There is a beautiful view of the dam and the mountains in the background from the restaurant deck.

From here we took a ride back through the estate, exited through the main gates and headed back along Satellite Road.

Olivia’s Coffee Bake

Northcliff corner

We took a drive up to Olivia’s near Northcliff Corner on Beyers Naude Drive for breakfast this morning. I was extremely surprised by how busy this little restaurant was. A number of cyclists frequent the place as it is close to the Northcliff water tower where cyclists and runners train.

They really have one of the most extensive breakfast menus I have ever seen. The choice is long and hard with such a big selection and variety. Everything is freshly made and looks scrumptious and delicious.

From their website – Olivias CoffeeBake opened in 2000 creating fresh breads and other goodies in a stunningly cottage looking shop located in Gauteng’s upper side, Northcliff. We offer one of the best breakfast menu’s in the area. Whether you are looking to go out to catch a bite or just have a cup of coffee with some friends we remain a neighborhood place where everything is handmade on the premises, fresh every day.

They have a large bakery which also does a whole selection of breads, confectionery and lots of nice fresh goodies to choose from. No wonder this spot is so highly recommended and busy. This Freedom Day, people were out in the beautiful sunny day as we have had so much rain in past few weeks, it was great to be able to get out again.

They have seating inside the restaurant, upstairs and downstairs as well as a nice outside deck area under a patio awning. Staff were friendly and efficient and we really really enjoyed the food. This is a ‘must stop’ to check it out.

The Station

Parkhurst

We had quite a bit to do today and because it was raining the whole day decided to take the car and not the bike. After a number of stops and errands completed it was time to head to our restaurant of choice for today for breakfast. We headed to Parkhurst and down 4th Avenue, I was surprised to note the number of new restaurants that have opened since we were last here, but also sadly the number of restaurants that have closed.

We stopped at The Station which is where Rockets Restaurant used to be. The Station is a cool new restaurant with a great London subway theme, some great murals and decor and even a red telephone booth separates the main restaurant from the bar area.

The passage to the bathrooms looks like a London subway. They have two bar areas and the one has a live DJ playing most Saturday nights, such a cool vibe. We had a full English Traditional breakfast and the cappuccino’s were absolutely awesome. The food was tasty and fresh and the staff were extremely friendly.

After breakfast we took a walk through the venue to have a look around and we would definitely want to return for an evening out some time soon.

Gaucho

Linden

We took an hour and a half ride from Honeydew, on R512 Pelindaba Road past Lanseria towards Harties. Then at the Broedestroom T-Junction we went right on the R104 towards Pretoria and then another right onto the R511 back towards Fourways. We went past Diepsloot through Fourways and right onto Main Road, through Randburg and onto Linden. This was a great ride out, just cruising in the cool Autumn morning to finally arrive at Gaucho Restaurant.

We arrived at about 1pm and although we missed the breakfast menu, we decided to order something different.

I ordered the Argentine Choripan, a mix of Argentine pork and beef served with chimichurri in a baguette. Heather ordered the Chicken Prego Roll, we shared half half and both were absolutely amazing and tasty. We also ordered cocktails, Heather had the Clover and I had a Brandy sours.

We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and the ride out to Gaucho. Service was friendly and the restaurant really has its own unique character. Green plants spread throughout and the kitchen marks the centrepiece of the restaurant.

Goddess Cafe

Linden

We took a 25 min ride through Northcliff to Linden to this great restaurant. When we arrived they asked us if we booked? No, we did not know we needed to book, are they really that busy? Well apparently they are, they were fully booked. But the manager asked us if we would be done by 12pm. It was only 10am so Yes, definitely would be done by 12pm.

They showed us to a table outside in the garden which was booked for 12pm. It was a nice warm morning and they have these pink umbrellas dotted around the garden providing some shade. The interior walls decorated with beautiful flowers and murals. Once we were in and seated we realized why this great little restaurant is fully booked, the decor and the friendly staff and the murals all contribute in making this a unique destination for birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations of all kinds.

We ordered our cappuccino’s and ordered breakfast. Heather took the Goddess Boyfriend Breakfast (because it has sausage) and I ordered the Eggs Benedict (because it looked great on the website)

We were equally happy with our selection, but we always order different food and then share half half. So I got some sausage, mushroom and tomato, and Heather got one of my English muffins with Eggs Benedict. Breakfast was tasty and well presented and fresh.

Paul

Polofields

We went through to Wildman Centurion this morning for a shoot because we are still waiting for our gun license to be approved. The entire process is very lengthy we started with Competency in September 2020, we received our Competency back in October 2021 and then submitted our License application immediately. There are still five steps left in the 28 step application process so hopefully within the next month or two we should receive our license and can then go collect our firearms.

It’s been 3 months since we last shot, so it was a bit rusty and took some time to get the feel and eye back in.

After our shooting session it was off to Paul in Midrand for breakfast. The weather was nice and cool, ideal riding conditions. 20 mins back down the N1 and we took Allandale offramp towards Mall of Africa. Paul is located at Polofields Crossing shopping centre and as we pulled up, we could see the restaurant was extremely busy and a queue of people waiting to be seated.

The wait did not take too long and soon we were seated and checking out the menu. It is always a good sign when people are queuing to get into a restaurant, this means the food is always freshly made and delicious. We ordered drinks and water, and continued to check out the menu. Food was coming out of the kitchen at a regular pace, as people were getting up to leave new patrons were being seated. It worked like a well oiled machine.

PAUL is a French Family owned Bakery and Patisserie since 1889. The menu has a typical French flare and presentation. Overall a very pleasant experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and will definitely be back to this one in the near future. This is a great restaurant with a great vibe and great food and friendly and efficient staff.

Noble Village

Hekpoort

We took a ride out to Hekpoort this morning on the BMW GS1200 Adventure to the Noble Village for breakfast. We have ridden past this place several times over the past 3 years and was not keen on visiting because our experience at the previous restaurant at this venue was not great.

But we were pleasantly surprised, the entire place has been upgraded, and cleaned up and the old house that used to have the restaurant in is completely not even used. The new owners have changed this into an adventure park with a restaurant. It is now a family venue including kiddies play park, peddle carts, acro-branch, hiking trail and 4×4 trail.

The restaurant has a number of large wooden tables for seating 8 people. Tables are indoors and outdoors and under the trees. It is a great setting and much better than when it was the old restaurant. (Goblins Cove) We thoroughly enjoyed the ride out and the venue. The food was great and we enjoyed sitting in an outdoor setting under the trees. Peaceful and beautiful with a lot to do for the whole family.

Open from 8am to 7pm on a Saturday, serving Breakfast, Lunch and Supper. Also open on a Sunday from 8am to 5pm, also open weekdays but closed on Tuesdays.

I recommend this new venue for you to try it out and hopefully you too will be pleasantly surprised. The Hussar Grill

Blueberry Square

It is always great to have a new shopping centre open in your area with new shops and restaurants. Since it’s opening in October, this centre is booming. We are amazed everyday when we drive past the entrance to see the queue of cars trying to get in and the parking lot is full of cars. Yet another success story.

There are a number of new restaurants that have opened and we were definitely going to support the local businesses and try them out. We visited The Hussar Grill for dinner for two on Friday evening and we had to book as they are fully booked. Yet another good sign, my wife always checks the various restaurants when we get to a new place and always chooses the restaurant that is full. Why? Because you know the food must be good and fresh, it hasn’t been made 2 days ago and is standing. Busy restaurants have to constantly make new fresh food.

The Hussar Grill is synonymous with excellent cuts of steak, grilled to perfection. They also offer various Weekday Celebrations – Blooming Mondays, Date Night Tuesdays, Wine Pairing Wednesday and Tender Thursdays. A great concept to keep patrons smiling and coming back during the week.

We thoroughly enjoyed our cut of steak and it was cooked to perfection, soft, melt in your mouth and succulent. We also had the chocolate vodka dessert in a Martini glass, this was very sweet, but still enjoyable. Our waiter was extremely friendly and attentive and it was a pleasant evening just enjoying each other’s company. The ambiance was soft, dimly lit with music playing in the background making for a perfect romantic dinner. No need to raise your voice trying to speak above the music or noise in the place, struggling to hear your partner speak.

Lava

Blueberry Square

We took a ride out to Centurion this morning for our monthly shoot at Wildman Centurion this morning. The weather was unusually cold for mid December, normally this time of the year it is scorching hot… there is a La Nina climate condition at moment causing cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that impact global weather patterns.

We would normally return from a long ride and head straight for the pool with a ice cold Hunters Dry. But we haven’t gone near the pool in the past 3 weeks due to all the rain and now this unusual cold spell. After our shoot, we headed back to Lava at Blueberry square for Breakfast.

We had a wonderful breakfast and the cappuccino was very good. This restaurant is located on the first floor and has a great view over to Northgate dome and Sandton in the distance. Decor is very modern and there is a great vibe created in the restaurant with the excellent quality sound system. This gives them a point of difference, most restaurants mess up the entire feel of the restaurant by putting in a poor quality sound system.

The staff were efficient and friendly and attentive to your needs. Overall I would rate this restaurant a 9 out 10 and would definitely recommendq it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The owner was visible and definitely hands on, perhaps because it was still a new restaurant and future success depends on the first couple of months after opening.

A beautiful restaurant comes highly recommended. The food was excellent and the chef came out of the kitchen to speak to customers and ensure everything was up to standard.

Bootleggers

Honeydew

We took an slow ride out to Wildman Centurion this morning for our monthly shoot and to collect our firearm motivation. This has been a long and slow process but we are almost at the end. We are at the final steps to the application process to possess a firearm for Occasional Sports Shooting license. We thoroughly enjoyed this mornings shoot it was fun and challenging, and the ride was good too. The weather was clear blue skies, with a cool breeze which is perfect bike riding weather.

Afterwards we headed back home to our local shopping mall which has just opened about 2 months ago. Blueberry Mall on Blueberry Road, Honeydew. They have a whole bunch of new stores, West Pack, Clicks, Crazy Store and Checkers. Plus they have a number of new restaurants which is great, right here on our doorstep. The Hussar Grill, Fishmongers, Bootleggers, Senor Peri Peri, and others.

We headed straight to Bootleggers for breakfast and it was quite amazing, the service was friendly and efficient. The food was delicious and well presented. Bootleggers originally started in Cape Town and now has a number of branches throughout Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Quote from website – Bootlegger Coffee Company was created in 2012 by 3 best friends, Pieter Bloem, De Waal Basson & Antonie Basson. The brand has now grown into multiple businesses all over Cape Town and Johannesburg, and still expanding. Each store has a carefully selected line from an AC/DC song hung on the wall in neon lights.

This branch had the words “Flick of the switch” and when we were there we wondered why they would have this phrase in neon lights behind the counter. Now reading their website it makes sense. This is from the song on the album with the same name.

A great little restaurant in a great location and ideal for a small intimate breakfast or a large family gathering, or even a work Skype call. Sit back relax and enjoy the experience.

Ultimately this is a coffee shop and their coffee is nothing short of spectacular. Beans are sourced from Central Africa and South America and roasted in Woodstock, Cape Town. Enjoy some of their own unique blends, which can also be purchased online and delivered to your doorstep.

Kiara Lodge

Clarens

We took a 3 and a half hour ride through to Kiara Lodge in Clarens for a week break for our wedding anniversary. We left Johannesburg at around 12pm and made our way through Vanderbijlpark, Sasolburg, Heilbron, Reitz, Bethlehem and onto Clarens. (332kms) and arrived at 15:30. The temperature dropped consistently after we left Johannesburg it was 22 degrees and when we arrived in Clarens it was 9 degrees.

Kiara Lodge is beautifully set in the mountains with a number of various accommodation types to choose from. Single room 4 sleepers to having an entire house that sleeps 12. There are fun activities for the children including an outside park, with trampolines, jungle gym, swings and a large jumping pillow. There is a games room, putt putt, outdoor chess, large indoor heated pools, a gym, shop and restaurant are all on site.

There is a dam with paddle boats and a few different hiking trails from easy, moderate to difficult levels. They have a rock climbing wall and Gorge swing too… lots to keep the family busy for the entire holiday while you can just relax and take in the fresh mountain air. They also have hundreds of bunnies all over the lodge, so the kids end up chasing these bunnies on the playground.

All the staff at the lodge including the reception staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Really 5 star service and no wonder the lodge is permanently fully booked. We tried for 2 years to get a booking and struggled. This place is definitely worth the ride.

Greenhouse Cafe

Rosemary Hill, Mooiplaats

We took a long ride out from Honeydew through Pretoria out to Mooiplaats. It was a beautiful spring day, 22 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. It took us an hour and twenty minutes along the N14, then N1 and N4 towards Emalahleni. There was about 5 kms of dirt roads to the Rosemary Hill farm, but it was not a bad road at all.

There is a treetop acrobranch adventure park in the trees for the kids to play, and they also have a beautiful wedding venue with an unusual outside chapel and unique indoor venue.

The restaurant is overlooking the Treetop Adventure Acrobranch park, and is located outside on a veranda under a canopy. The food was absolutely delicious and 5 star quality and presentation. We ordered the Milano pizza with the Greenhouse salad. It was too good!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the ride and this was made even better by the venue and the food. Great day out, off the beaten track and away from the busy city life.

The Green Peppercorn Bistro

Morningside

We took a short ride out to Morningside shopping centre today as we needed to do some shopping for unique bar memorabilia. But we first stopped off at The Green Peppercorn Bistro for breakfast. What a great little restaurant with friendly staff and great vibe. The restaurant overlooks the small parking lot and during warm summer days the large fold away doors are open. This morning it was a bit chilly as winter starts to set in, so the doors were kept closed and we sat inside away from the cold chill of outside.

Service was fast, friendly and inviting and the breakfast was really good. They also have a sushi bar Mr Maki which probably produces the most amazing freshly made sushi to order. Not what we want for breakfast, but makes this a great lunch or dinner venue too.

They have a great wine selection and alcohol is available for onsite consumption during Covid. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and would love to return one night to see how it all works and looks at night.

It was then time to face the morning chilly air on the bike, but by now the sun was fully out and it was starting to warm up. That is what we love about the Joburg weather, winter is not cold, wet and miserable. Winters are cold, dry and Sunny. Back on the bike and onto Alshebrugar vintage bar memorabilia in Sandringham. We met Bruce the owner, what an amazing guy, he has so many stories about each item on display. He can tell you a hundred stories in one day and still have more to tell you tomorrow. A fantastic little store for different unique and quaint bar stuff. Some of it one of a kind stuff that no-one else has.

We ended up buying some stuff from him but could not fit it on the bike, so we had to head home to fetch the car. We bought these 3 coke cans that form a sort of bar stand and 2 chairs. Very cool.

Ba-Pita

Norwood

We took an hours ride through to Centurion this morning for our shooting lesson at Wildman and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thereafter it was back onto the bike for a trip from Centurion to Norwood to this great restaurant. The name and management have changed from Factory on Grant to Ba-Pita. Offering a great Mediterranean menu in a great little restaurant with a great vibe. We thoroughly enjoyed our Breakfast Laffa with Pastrami sausage.

After breakfast we went to visit this awesome little antique bar handler who has some great bar memorabilia and signage. We loved looking at all the stuff crammed into this little store and the owner Bruce is a fantastic character. If you are looking for anything unique and full of character for your bar or home or store this is the place to get it.

We purchased these great Coke can seats and bar table for our bar area at home. Then it was time to head home.

V8 Roadhouse

Hartebeespoort Dam

We went for our morning shoot at Wildman Centurion this morning first thing on the bike. It was a particularly cool morning at 12 degrees when we left. The wind chill factor was definitely lower than this. But we enjoy riding in the cooler rather than warmer weather.

We headed out of Honeydew down Boundary Road towards Lanseria, then onto the N14 to Centurion. It was a great ride out with very little traffic on the road. It is crazy to think that we have been doing this for almost 6 years this year. This picture was taken in August 2015.

We had a great shoot and straight after, it was off to Harties and breakfast. We had to try this new venue and we were not disappointed. V8 is an absolutely fabulous venue, family friendly with a large kiddies play park in the back. The restaurant has great indoor and outdoor seating. The vibe is great with music playing throughout and the decor resembles everything V8. Old petrol pumps, Mustang accessories and the lights are even fitted in suspension springs.

We enjoyed their Roadhouse Brekkie, I must admit they made the best eggs we have had for a while. Some places make the eggs too hard, some make it too soft with the white runny. We definitely don’t like it like that. But they made it perfectly. Unfortunately the coffee got me again, the caffeine made my heart rate increase and I broke out in a sweat. Couldn’t breathe properly and my appetite was gone. What a waste of a perfect breakfast…

After breakfast it was back on the bike, and coming into Harties we came past this Farmer’s market – Hart Mark. So we decided to stop by on our way home. This was a great market and an opportunity to buy some more items for our bar. Then it was a slow and steady ride back home.

Harvard Cafe

Midrand, Grand Central

We took a great morning ride out to Grand Central Airport today. This light aircraft airport is hidden away in Midrand. This is definitely a place to visit, a little hidden gem. Great food, great venue, great music and friendly staff make this an awesome little restaurant.

They have a great outside area next to the airport apron, under the trees and the umbrella’s. There is also a great little play area for the kids which makes this a great family venue too.

This restaurant offers the thrill of the sound of airplanes all around the restaurant tables. So if you enjoy the vibe, with 80’s music, great food and planes taking off and landing around you then this is the place to be.

Ground Cafe

Driefontein Rd, Muldersdrift

We went for a shooting lesson this morning, it’s been 6 months of continuous practice and muscle memory is now much improved. We had such a good time at Wildman Centurion this morning and we shot with all 3 pistols which was a lot of fun. Then it was back onto the GS back to Muldersdrift to Ground Cafe for breakfast.

We got to Ground just before the breakfast menu ended so we were able to order a Smashed Avo on Rye and Wakey Bakey (bacon, egg and cheese bun) with a cappuccino and orange juice. It was so beautiful to sit outside under the oak tree’s and just enjoy the peace and quiet of the outdoors. a number of cyclists who ride the Muldersdrift routes were there and one or two couples were enjoying a picnic on the grass under the trees.

Breakfast was freshly made and the waiter was friendly and efficient. A great start to this hot Sunny weekend, just chatting about our next trip and holiday plans.

From the Ground Venue website:

Our charming space is wonderful for all types of smaller celebrations such as kids birthday parties or intricate weddings.

The venue is multi-purpose with a charming indoor area that opens out onto a veranda that flows into the garden.

Find your happiness where the sun shines under the trees, or experience the comfort of our
farmhouse-style indoor setup. Our Ground Café is a perfect pit-stop during or after your cycle through the Cradle for a bit of sustenance.

Neck and Deck

Muldersdrift

We took an hour and a half ride through Muldersdrift, past Lanseria towards Hartebeespoort Dam this morning. We past the Lion Park on Pelindaba Road and took a left towards Broedestroom. We went right at the R512 over the dam and just before the new road over the mountain took a left towards Hekpoort.

It was a beautiful day out on the bike today with blue skies and a nice cool breeze. We have not been able to go out for a ride for the past two weeks due to all the rain we have experienced in the Highveld. We just took it nice and slow and took in all the views and smells and it was so good to be out and about again.

We stopped off at Neck and Deck Restaurant on our way back. Newly rebuilt with a brand new menu offering breakfast, light meals, main meals and sundowners, the Neck & Deck offers seating for 300, a children’s play area and giraffe feeding.

We have been here before the renovation and it has improved significantly since we were last here about 3 years ago. We were thoroughly impressed and it is a great venue for a biker club to visit.

After breakfast it was a short ride home, past Bidon Restaurant, Kloofzicht, Glenburn Lodge and Cradle Moon. All of which we have visited and scroll through my previous blogs to see these reviews.

Nikos

Modderfontein

We took a long ride out to Pretoria along the N14 and then came back down the N1 to Greenstone. We stopped at Flamingo Shopping centre opposite Modderfontein bird and sculpture park. We had a Greek brunch at Nikos, what a great little Greek restaurant overlooking the lake. We could see some families were enjoying a picnic in the park across the road. A beautiful warm morning for a ride.

We enjoyed the Spicy Lamb Kofta, fried halloumi and Santorini Baked Feta and Phyllo. We shared the helpings with an ice cold Hunters and Savannah Light to wash it down. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. This is definitely a little hidden gem, peaceful and with a beautiful view.

Typical Greek flavours and atmosphere with a true Greek owner cannot be more authentic than that. We thoroughly enjoyed the outing and would recommend this restaurant as a great evening out with the family.

Enstyle

Parys

We took an hour and a half ride through to Parys this morning to pick up a penny farthing ornament for the garden. What a great ride, the weather was a perfect winters morning. 12 degrees and sunny with not a breath of wind. Perfect riding conditions. We just headed out on the N1 towards Bloemfontein and took the Parys offramp and then 20 kilometers to the beautiful small Free State town of Parys.

This is not the one we got as this one is not for sale, but a similar smaller version for the garden wall. They say you need to make a house a home. We have been staying here for 12 years already and love being in Johannesburg – this is home.

We browsed through a few gift stores and purchased our penny farthing from The Ugly Duckling a great curio store in Parys. We also bought some cool little odds and ends for my bar. Then we stopped at Enstyle, it is a unique curio shop and restaurant setup. It is like having a store within a store concept. Various owners having various stalls within a large barn, but very nicely laid out. You walk from one to another without even knowing you have moved into the next store. In the middle of all these stores you have a quaint little restaurant.

They have a selection of cakes, toasted sandwiches and other tasty treats offered from the coffee shop and deli. We ordered a smoked chicken toasted sandwich with some chips and 2 cappuccino’s. The also have outdoor seating which was great to sit outside in the sun as the air was still a bit chilly.

Papachino’s

Fourways

We took a leisurely half an hour ride out to Papachino’s in Fourways yesterday for a bite to eat. We love the Papachino’s vibe and facilities as they truly cater for the whole family. Beautiful interior design and seating for intimate couples or large rowdy family gatherings. They offer outdoor seating and a large play area for the kids to spend hours climbing, jumping and sliding.

It is great to just take a ride out even if it is just a short trip up the road on the BMW R1200GS ADV. the power and handling of this machine is unlike anything else out there. Many other motorcycle companies have tried to replicate and reproduce the GS, unsuccessfully. The ride is just superior in every way, so taking it up the road to Papachino’s was a win win. A great restaurant on a great bike.

PLTFRM

Wolwespruit

Type: Restaurant and adventure park

We took an hour ride out along the N1 to Pretoria this morning with the kids following behind us in the car. What a beautiful winters morning out on the bike, the temperature just on 12 degrees but the wind chill factor felt a lot cooler. This was the first time Micayle ventured out onto the highway with her car, so a great achievement for her.

We booked a table for 6 outside on the stoep and on arrival the place was packed, cars queuing to get in and no more parking space meant they had to park outside and walk in. Luckily we booked so no waiting we could just walk in and sit down. It was cool outside on the stoep and with the sun on our backs made it comfortable and pleasant.

Breakfast was great, service was great too, I love the atmosphere with all the activities going on around. Kids play area, people walking the trails, bicycle trails, an outdoor gym and the restaurant.

From their website – A new lifestyle experience that serves the full family unit. We are passionate about people, eating, socialising and making memories and we thank you from the bottom of our heart for embarking on this journey with us.

Diep in die Berg

Pretoria East

Type: Restaurant and Accommodation

We took an hour ride from Randpark Ridge up the N14 past Diepsloot, then took the R114 to Stoneridge, left onto the R55 towards Zwartkops, and a right onto the M10 which eventually becomes Solomon Mahlangu Drive. This was a peaceful slow ride out to Diep in die Berg Restaurant.

On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the facilities at the restaurant. There is accommodation, conference facilities, a chapel and beautiful gardens with the restaurant. Staff were welcoming and friendly and the restaurant was not well attended due to the Covid pandemic. But do not be misled, fantastic food and 5 star presentation makes this a venue we would definitely like to revisit in the future.

We ordered the Eggs Benedict and the Classic Breakfast which was tasty and at a great price. We enjoyed some good company with friends and only left the restaurant at 1pm. Back on the bike we took the long way home down the M6 toward Que Sera.

Onto the R25 toward Kempton Park, back to Olifantsfontein towards Sandton and N14 to Randpark Ridge. A great round trip of about 125km and a relaxing winters morning on the bike.

Pont de Val

Parys

We took an hour ride down the N1 in the direction of Bloemfontein but took the Vanderbijlpark offramp. Just as we entered Vanderbijl, turned right towards Parys and about 18 kms down the road stopped at Pont de Val. Which is beautifully located on the Vaal River.

It is so good to get out on the bike after so many weeks in lockdown. The freedom of the open road and to feel the cool fresh winter air on your face. Although everything is brown and dry, typical Highveld winter conditions, it was great to see our beautiful country again.

Lockdown has made us all appreciate the small things in life again. Appreciate just going outside after being confined to your house. Seeing the open fields with cows grazing, seeing the trees along the side of the road and this beautiful countryside.

Pont de Val has a beautiful restaurant located along the banks of the Vaal River and tables and chairs underneath the most gorgeous oak trees. Seating is available indoors or outdoors but a reservation is necessary. No walk in customers are allowed. There are also three cute little private cubicles that can be hired for the day along the River bank. This includes lunch, a bottle of sparkling wine and desert, for that special occasion, anniversary or just a private lunch.

Lunch was fresh, delicious and 5-star quality presentation. Waiters and staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Well prepared for the Covid screening, temperature checking and sanitizing. Overall a great day out and very impressed with the restaurant and will definitely return here in the summer.

We left and turned right and took a scenic ride through Parys town and stopped at the Ugly Duckling curio shop. Bought a cute gift and then headed back home past Fochville to the N12 back to Johannesburg. It was a great 270 km round trip.

54 on Bath

Rosebank

Type: Hotel and Restaurant

We took a 40 min ride through the leafy green suburb of Greenside to Rosebank to the beautiful 54 on Bath luxury hotel and award winning restaurant – Level Four.

This is an exclusive, premium restaurant with quality food, beautiful presentation and award winning service. If you are looking for a 5 star venue then Level Four Restaurant is the place to be.

The restaurant has a beautiful outside area that has an outdoor garden and pool on the 4th floor of the hotel. Great for getting the same 5 star service in a quaint garden setting. We also brought our Ops team here for a team lunch…

Aviators Brewing Co

Harties

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://aviators.co.za/

We took an hour and a half slow ride out to Aviators this morning. It was a cool Saturday morning with hardly any cars on the road. Most people away for the Christmas break, and so we took the long route enjoying the green scenery after all the rains we have had.

We went through Muldersdrift, past Avianto onto the Hekpoort road and just after Maropeng, cut a right onto Satellite Road, back to Harties.

The paintings on the walls are exquisite and beautiful and adds to the overall experience inside the restaurant and bar area. TV’s on the wall offer all sporting events live so it is an absolutely great place to chill and watch the cricket or the bokke.

Some chairs are made from planes engine housing and add to the restaurant theme… the bar looks like the body from the actual aeroplane, showing the windows on the side… very cool.

Outside there is a lot of seating under their Aviator gazebos and there is a large dining area under the lapa. This could also be used for functions and events.

There is a children’s play area with swings, jungle gym and a jumping castle. There is lots of grass areas to just run and play under the careful supervision of the staff.

There is even a helicopter landing pad for those with a bit more adventure.

Food was tasty and waiters friendly, service was impeccable and this is definitely one we would want to visit again soon. Prices were very reasonable and we thoroughly enjoyed the vibe and overall experience.

Aroma Coffee Roastery

Hazelwood, Pretoria

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://aromacoffee.co.za/

We took a 45min ride through to Hazelwood in Pretoria this morning to this great new restaurant. There was such a great vibe and the staff were friendly and welcoming. This was possibly the best cappuccino were have ever had…

We ordered the Full Breakfast and it was a great meal and just enough to satisfy the appetite. Did you know? A roasted bean maintains peak flavour for only two weeks, and by the fourth week is actually stale. Aroma roasts their own coffee beans fresh and this makes all the difference.

They also have a full selection of Gelato ice cream to top off the meal with a great desert. A great atmosphere and very busy restaurant always tells a story, they are onto something and people like what they do and the manner in which they present it.

Casalinga

Muldersdrift

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://www.casalinga.co.za/

We drove through to Muldersdrift on Sunday afternoon for lunch with the kids, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The restaurant was fully booked, this is always a good sign. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was absolutely delicious. Sunday afternoon buffet comes highly recommended…

Quote – “Casalinga means housewife.
Everything we have at Casalinga is lovingly home-made.
We want everybody who comes through our doors to feel at home on our beautiful organic farm.”
– Jenny De Luca (owner and founder)

There is a large indoor and outdoor seating area and the restaurant also caters for weddings, parties, functions and special events. A great Italian Restaurant with a great atmosphere and great Italian food, like home cooked food Mama Rossa style.

Life Grand Cafe

Hazelwood, Pretoria

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://www.lifegrandcafe.com/

We took a 45 minute ride this morning to the trendy suburb of Hazelwood in Pretoria. Life Grand Cafe is an experience rather than just a restaurant. Food is exquisitely prepared and presented in a way that keeps you coming back for more.

The waiters were eager to serve, friendly and on hand to cater for your every need. Restaurant decor was inviting and modern, I was even impressed with the cleanliness and quality of the entire establishment, toilets, condiments, tables and menus. Unfortunately we have visited some restaurants where the menus are sticky, dirty and the condiments have old hard sauce still around the spout.

Care and attention to detail makes a world of difference, well done on a great overall experience. We would definitely recommend this for your next visit.

Pestana Lodge

Malelane, Mpumalanga

Type: Accommodation and Restaurant

We recently visited Nelspruit for a weekend away on the bike and decided to take a 30 minute ride out to Pestana Lodge for breakfast. What a beautiful Lodge, situated about 70m from the Kruger National Park Southern Gate, or a mere 800m from the Malelane Gate.

The Lodge has a stunning wooden deck overlooking the Crocodile River, which acts as a border between Mpumalanga and Kruger. We watched as a number of elephant, and buck came down to the river to drink. There were also a number of hippo already in the river.

We had a breakfast buffet, which had a big selection and variety of cold and hot foods on offer. It was a hearty breakfast for the price and well worth the ride through from Nelspruit.

They offer various forms of accommodation in this 4 star resort and with the Kruger just a few meters away, you can arrange a safari to go and see the wildlife literally on your doorstep.

Tashas

Menlyn on Main

Type: Restaurant

We decided to ride out to Menlyn in Pretoria this morning as it was a beautiful cool Autumn morning. Just enough cool air and blue skies and the sun was out. Not hot enough to be uncomfortable and not cool enough to need something warm underneath, just a perfect Jozie day.

The ride took us almost 45 minutes along the N14 from Muldersdrift, traveling at about 100kph to take in the scenery and enjoy the beauty all around us. We tend to get in our cars or on our bikes to reach the destination, and we forget that part of the journey is the journey not the destination. Slow down and take it all in.

We arrived at Menlyn on Main at about 9:30am and they have such a nice variety of coffee shops and restaurants to choose from. We have been to Old Town Italy before (see blog below) and so we decided to check out Tashas.

They offer indoor and outdoor seating and can accommodate large groups around large tables or intimate small tables for couples. It has a great vibe and staff are friendly and efficient. The food is tasty and well presented and at a great price. Really great venue and we were very happy with the choice of restaurant this morning.

Villa San Giovanni

Wonderboom Airport

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://vsg.co.za/

We took a 45 minute ride through to Wonderboom Airport to this beautiful Italian Restaurant. Villa San Giovanni offers elegant evening dining in their beautiful restaurant from 2pm.

They also offer The Terrace and Pizzeria which is an informal setting next to the runway. Breakfast starts at 8am and they also have a small kiddies play area.

We got there after breakfast had closed for the day, (breakfast closes at 10:30am) so we opted for burgers as a brunch. We were blown away by their blue cheese burger, and avo and feta burger. So we cut the burgers in half and shared half half. Their pizzas looked delicious too, but having had pizza the night before, we opted for the burgers which did not disappoint.

Jackson’s Real Food Market

Bryanston

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://jacksonsrealfoodmarket.co.za/

We took a 40 minute ride out to Jackson’s this morning in Bryanston on our breakfast run. This is a great food market with a vibey restaurant.

Food was fresh and inviting and staff were friendly and efficient. It is a small family run business where the owner has seen the need for fresh chemical free food, which is the backbone of their philosophy and success.

Locally sourced organic produce and hormone free grass fed meats. This is real wholesome food at a great price. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Glenburn Lodge

Muldersdrift

Type: Restaurant and Accommodation

Breakfast was a buffet with everything you need from yoghurt, fruit, breads, croissants, cheeses, to hot breakfast options including bacon, eggs, mushrooms and sausage. Help yourself to as much as you want, order tea, coffee, juice or water to finish it off.

Glenburn Lodge has large beautiful grounds and is situated along the crocodile river with a small waterfall feature at the bottom of the grounds. The beautiful gardens are laid out for you to take a leisurely stroll though, or just sit under the trees and relax.

Glenburn also offers accommodation in various forms, there are hotel rooms, garden cottages or a tented camp site. Nice on 4th

Parkhurst

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://niceon4th.co.za/

We took a nice 30 min leisurely ride out to Parkhurst this morning to this great little restaurant. The home of the original egg basket and a restaurant with a lot of character and charm.

Don’t be surprised at how filling the portions are, they look small and petite but pack a punch on the filling. Great looking and tasty food, served by welcoming and friendly staff.

Try something new at Nice, we tried the Ginger Lemon tea, or try the Devil’s Advocate, Ginger and Chilli infused tea. Some great unique options to choose from. They offer Breakfast, Lunch or an afternoon tea and also do a selection of cakes on sale to take home.

Riboville Restaurant

Midrand

Type: Restaurant and Accommodation

Website: http://riboville.com/

We took a short 30 minute ride out to the Waterfall Equestrian Estate in Midrand this morning to Riboville Restaurant. This is a 5 Star Boutique Hotel and Restaurant. Bookings are essential.

‘Riboville’s boutique hotel, conference venue and restaurant is the perfect blend of urban luxury in a country setting.

Overlooking a lush polo field and tranquil dam which attracts bird life all year round. Located in an equestrian estate, Riboville’s lavish double-volume barn design, echoes this setting with the equestrian-themed art and decor.’ – website.

We thoroughly enjoyed the English breakfast from the a la carte menu and the pricing was reasonable at R90 per person. The breakfast was freshly made and beautifully presented to compliment the beautiful view over the polo field. Sabelo, our waiter was friendly and efficient, offering us excellent service.

The Usual on Grant

Norwood

Type: Restaurant

We took a 40 min ride through Greenside, the trees were beautiful and green covering the road like a forest tunnel. Heather loves riding through these roads lined with trees. Then we went through Rosebank and onto Norwood.

The Usual offers an extensive Breakfast menu catering for various options from bacon, macon, salmon and vegan. The food was delicious and well presented and staff friendly and helpful. I would recommend this for a lazy Saturday morning breakfast to just sit and relax with a good coffee.

They have indoor seating and some tables outside on the pavement, we sat outside for breakfast as it was a beautiful day.

The Fat Zebra

Linden

Type: Restaurant

We absolutely love these small family run restaurants, where the owner is interacting with clients, Kevin was the first person we spoke to right at the entrance. Involved, interaction, serving and a hands on owner manager. Not only does this restaurant have great staff, friendly and efficient (because the owner is) but also amazing food. No wonder there was a waiting queue to get in.

If an unusual breakfast is what you’re after, look no further than The Fat Zebra in Linden. Inspired by Heston Blumenthal’s ‘The Fat Duck’, here on African soil restaurateur Kevin Weisz is in pursuit of the happiness of socializing.

Black Bamboo

Menlyn

Type: Restaurant and Accommodation

Website: http://www.menlynhotel.com/

We made a booking at the Menlyn Boutique Hotel Restaurant called Black Bamboo for our Saturday breakfast run and we were pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of this establishment.

We took a 45 minute ride out from Honeydew to Menlyn and the ride was pleasant as it was already nice and warm with a cool breeze blowing.

The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating with a number of unique art pieces decorating the hotel and restaurant common areas. This makes it a unique experience and beautiful location to sit and relax with family or friends.

Breakfast was beautifully presented, extremely tasty and at a great price.

After breakfast we took a ride through Pretoria to the Voortrekker Monument to have a look at the History of the Voortrekkers. We were pleasantly surprised by the monument and the views over Pretoria is breathtaking.

After a walk around the monument, we had a quick drink at the onsite restaurant and then it was time to get back on the bike and head back home.

We took a 45min ride out to this beautiful restaurant and Conference Centre for our breakfast run. They also offer over 50 rooms accommodation on the property with conference facilities and beautiful gardens.

The venue also transforms into a beautiful wedding venue.

We thoroughly enjoyed Patrick’s hospitality, he reminded me of a butler who wanted to please his guests by going out of his way, and nothing was too much trouble.

The large signboard on the road states they are only open from Monday to Saturday for Lunch and Dinner. But they are also open for breakfast daily. Contact the restaurant and make a booking.

Thaba Eco Estate – Kraal Restaurant

Type: Restaurant and Accommodation

Website: http://www.thabahotel.co.za

We took a leisurely ride through to Thaba Eco Estate this morning along the N12 towards Alberton, taking the Kliprivier Drive offramp towards Mall of the South. It was a beautiful Spring morning with temperatures set to rise to 29 degrees by this afternoon.

Vegetation at Thaba was all still brown and dry from the cold winter here on the Highveld but I am sure this must transform into a beautiful green, lush paradise during the summer rains.

We sat outside in the gardens under the gazebo which was great as we had the whole outside to ourselves. The restaurant was fully booked for breakfast.

On the weekends the restaurant serves a Breakfast buffet and it is a huge spread of cold meats and cheeses, breads and biscuits. Many dry cereal options, fruit and yoghurt, hot meals include sausage, bacon, mushrooms, peri peri livers, eggs, omelettes and toast. Various juices, water, tea and coffee also available, all this for only R210 per person.

We thoroughly enjoyed the morning and would definitely like to try out their lunch buffet over a weekend or their Spa for a treatment or massage.

Pearl Harbour

Lonehill

Type: Mediterranean Restaurant

Website: https://www.pearlharbour.co.za/

We took a half an hour ride out to Lonehill this morning to Pearl Harbour restaurant. What a great venue especially for big sporting events as they have big screens, a great bar, a large restaurant seating area and a sushi bar with conveyor belt.

We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and the price was actually very reasonable for the portion sizes.

they even have a small seated section in the restaurant with beach sand on the floor, which gives it that real Mediterranean look and feel.

The service was amazing and we found our waiter to be attentive and aware of our every need.

Overall a great restaurant and I would definitely recommend it…

Fisherman’s Deck

Hartebeespoort

Type: Restaurant

We decided to do a lunch run after church, so we went to church on the bike and then left for a ride to Hartebeespoort straight after. What an enjoyable and unexpected ride. Apart from the normal Saturday morning breakfast run. We visited the Fisherman’s Deck in Harties just behind the aquarium and French Toast. (See our blog on this great restaurant too)

They have a large seating area downstairs under an ‘afdak’ with a bar area and tv screens to watch all the latest sporting events.

They also have an upstairs deck on a small pond with wooden tables and a great place to relax and enjoy sundowners. There was live music playing and a great atmosphere created while patrons enjoyed their lunch.

We ordered drinks on the deck and a seafood lunch platter. It was great to just switch off, laugh, listening to music, watching the ducks on the water and enjoy the moment. Away from the hustle and bustle of work and city living, just relaxing on a Sunday afternoon with great company and great food.

We were pleasantly surprised by the food, it was delicious, tasty and well presented. I would definitely recommend this venue for a lazy, relaxing Saturday or Sunday afternoon lunch.

The Whippet Cafe

Linden

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://thewhippetcoffee.com/

We visited the Whippet in Linden this morning for our breakfast run and although it was extremely cold on the bike, this was well worth the trip. The venue was full and a queue waiting to be seated is always a good sign.

We sat outside as the restaurant was completely full, but they gave us nice warm fleece blankets and it was actually quite pleasant, soon other patrons joined us outside.

The breakfast was delicious and unique, we took the Modern Mason Breakfast with poached eggs, mushrooms, pork sausage and bacon. What really got my attention is the various flavors of tea’s and coffees. Anything from Peanut Butter hot chocolate, Chai Latte to pineapple ginger tea.

Afro-Boer

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://www.afroboer.co.za/

We have been told about Afro-Boer by friends and have struggled to get a booking. They are that busy. A great restaurant at No1 Meerlust Road, Equestria, Pretoria.

It took us an hour ride out to this amazing restaurant from Honeydew on the West Rand, but a great ride in the warm Autumn Jozi mid-morning. On arrival the parking lot was already full of cars, this is always a good sign. We have been to a few restaurants where we were the only guests for the morning and then you know why when you get your breakfast.

The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and has a lot of space to enjoy a large family sit down around the large centre table. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful, creating a great vibe in the restaurant.

Food is started from scratch and therefore takes time, but is fresh, warm and tasty. Well worth the extra 10 minute wait. Quaint little boards decorate the place, giving it its unique character. “Never trust a skinny cook” hangs in the kitchen.

We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant and will definitely pay it another visit in the summer.

Olives and Plates

Wits Club

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.olivesandplates.co.za/

We had to book for this one as they are always fully booked. We took a 30 minute ride down Beyers Naudé to Wits University to Olives and Plates Restaurant. It was a chilly morning on the bike with a bite in the air.

We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant with the professional service and customer centric focus. Food presentation was at chef quality standard, great looking and tasty food.

I took the Canadian French Toast and Heather took the Open Toasted Rye with poached egg. The food was delicious and well balanced with sweet and savoury, crunchy and smooth, fresh and natural all in one plate.

The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating and a strong Cape Dutch setting underneath the trees.

Moroccan House

Menlyn

Type: Restaurant and Accommodation

Website: http://www.moroccanhouse.co.za

We took a 45 minute ride out to Moroccan House this morning for our breakfast run. The weather was clear blue skies with a bit of a bite in the air, made the ride out a very pleasant one.

This is a Moroccan styled house with a rooftop cafe and unique Moroccan cuisine.

I ordered a Kefda Omelette and Heather ordered a Kefda Tagine. We also took their Moka Pot Cappuccino which had a spicy flavour, unusual but nice.

At the heart of the House is also a large function venue which can be used for weddings, birthdays or even a staff function. It has a high roof which opens up the venue and gives it its unique character. This venue is available for hire.

After breakfast we headed to the Union Buildings to walk around in the gardens and take pictures at the Nelson Mandela statue.

The Factory on Grant

Norwood

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.thefactoryongrant.co.za/

We took a 45 minute ride through the beautiful suburb of Greenside and Rosebank to Norwood. The Factory on Grant promotes outdoor living spaces, with small boutique stores leading off the courtyard of the restaurant. They call it ‘anti-mall’ which literally means get out of the big city malls and into the country and the outdoors.

The Factory is a place to meet and enjoy, to be inspired and to share ideas over breakfast, lunch or supper. We don’t want a static venue and hope that it evolves over time and we also plan to have regular changes in themes and moods to keep it alive and interesting. – website A place to just sit and enjoy the company of a friend or loved one, outside in the courtyard under the umbrellas or inside on one of the couches.

Food was fresh, and tasty and well presented. I enjoyed an Eggs Benedict and Heather took the Traditional breakfast. Their cappuccino’s were also delicious, not too strong, just right.

Blue Crane Restaurant

Nieuw Muckleneuk

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://www.bluecranerestaurant.co.za/

We booked a table at the Blue Crane Restaurant this morning for breakfast on the deck overlooking the small dam and bird sanctuary.

The restaurant has a few seating options, indoors, upstairs bar, upstairs deck overlooking the dam, on the deck downstairs, outside garden area or around the boma.

Breakfast was delicious and well priced with great service. We enjoyed the morning sitting on the deck, and had a visitor pop by our table.

Cappuccino’s were great, and we had a Traditional breakfast and a Kingfisher breakfast which was tasty. I would definitely recommend this for a family fun day out, come through and watch the game in the sports bar or a quiet romantic dinner.

The Grove

Swartruggens

Type: Restaurant

We took an hour and a half ride out through Muldersdrift, Magaliesburg, Derby, Koster to Swartruggens. This was a great ride, the weather was cool and hardly any traffic on the road. We rode past a few sunflower 🌻 farms and decided to stop and take a picture. My mother always loved sunflowers and whenever we see sunflowers we say ‘mom is looking over us’.

The restaurant is right at the entrance to the little town, and offers a farm style, outdoors setting. There is a shop inside the restaurant and a mini bar. The food is simple, fresh and home styled cooking.

We just sat outside under the trees for about an hour, just chatting and enjoying the outdoors fresh air.

The trip on the BMW R1200GS ADV is a smooth, powerful ride and an absolute pleasure on long distances.

Craighall

Type: Restaurant

We tried this quaint little restaurant in Craighall this morning and thoroughly enjoyed the outside patio. Set in a garden, under umbrellas and a covered patio, it really is a great setting.

The food was great and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. We orders the usual and was pleasantly surprised by the presentation and how tasty the food was. Breakfast run breakfast.

Try Possums for a delicious lunch or a romantic dinner, their Sunday lunch also looks like a great option. I will definitely return here for another meal.

Old Town Italy

Menlyn on Main

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://oldtown.co.za/

We visited this beautiful Italian styled restaurant and in-house bakery in Menlyn on Maine this morning.

There is a great Italian flare to the place and the fresh smell of the bakery fills the restaurant. The staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. The food is fresh, tasty with an Italian touch. This is a unique dining experience and well worth the 45 min trip up the N1.

They even have their own Gelato bar offering a whole range of flavors. They also have an old bar where you can just sit and relax with a glass of Italian wine, a cocktail or a whiskey.

We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast and would recommend it to family and friends.

Craft

In Parkhurst

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.craftrestaurant.co.za/

We visited the retro Craft restaurant in Parkhurst this morning. This restaurant has a unique feel about it and you get the feeling that you have been transported back into a bygone era when handcrafted, good quality goods were made.

Leather, copper, wood and brick help compliment the overall ambiance and decor in the restaurant. They also have a real old fashioned pub, which looks like a great place to sit with friends and enjoy a good game of soccer.

The food was freshly made and time and care taken in preparation and presentation. The food portions were generous and thoroughly enjoyable and tasty.

“People want to be taken back to an era when one only bought ingredients and not mass produced meals, an era when craftsmen took immense pride in their vocations and things were made with love rather than measurement, with care rather than science, an era when quality and individuality was a common given” – website.

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://gabriellastearoom.co.za/

“Gabriella’s Tea Room’s goal is to bring you and your family through a journey to Hungary and Italy, and WOW your taste buds with my delicious family recipes” – website.

This restaurant came recommended by a friend, and so we came through this morning to check it out and we were pleasantly surprised by ambience, food and service.

The restaurant has a real Italian feel and vibe and the food is not your normal menu but freshly made European traditional foods and fresh bakes.

The breakfast restaurant is situated behind the La Cucina Di Ciro Restaurant which offers lunch and dinner meals located in Parktown North.

Come over and try out this great little restaurant, it was quite full this morning so perhaps booking a table might be necessary to avoid disappointment.

Katse Dam Trip

Ulysses bike club to Lesotho

Type: Accommodation and place of interest

We headed out to Katse Dam, Lesotho over the weekend. There were 16 bikes and a back up support vehicle that went with on the trip. We left Johannesburg down the N1 at 05:30am on Friday morning, with a brief stop for coffee and muffins at Villiersdorp.

Then we headed off to Thanda Tau for a buffet breakfast and a fill up for the bikes that needed it. This is a great little pit stop on your way to Durban.

Then we headed down south, through Harrismith and past the Sterkfontein dam to Little Switzerland for some drinks and photos with the Drakensburg in the background.

Then it was back on the bikes to head back around the Sterkfontein dam, through Phuthaditjhaba to Witsieshoek for lunch. But not before we stopped for another photo.

Some awesome pictures, and beautiful weather allowed for magnificent views over the valley. After lunch it was time to get back on the bikes and time to head towards Clarens. But half way through Golden Gate we did a small detour up the mountain to a look-out point and took more photos.

Then back on the bikes through Golden Gate, we headed past Clarens, 8 kms past Clarens to the Ash River Highlands Water Project. This is where the water enters South Africa from the Katse Dam Highlands Water Project. This is the size of the pipe that brings water from Katse Dam to South Africa.

Then back onto our bikes to our final stop in Clarens for the day. Time to refill to prepare for the following days trip, unpack, freshen up, enjoy a sundowner on the deck at the Maluti Mountain Lodge, supper and then bed.

Up early the next morning for breakfast and a quick route chat from our group leader Leon. We had a chance to catch this hot air balloon in the Golden Gate valley.

Then it was time to head to the Lesotho border at Caledonspoort. It was quick and easy through this border post and then on our way to Katse Dam. But not before our mountainous climb through 320 bends as we weaved our way to the top of the mountain. A quick stop for a picnic at the top of the mountain viewing point.

Back on the bikes, down the other side, once again weaving through what felt like another 320 bends. If you were not very comfortable in going through bends before this trip, believe me you would know your bike by the end of this trip. I was amazed at how well the fully laiden GS with panniers, top box and pillion just glided through those turns at 45 degrees. Then we headed towards Katse Dam. After dropping off our bags at our chalets, it was time to head to the information Centre for a tour into the dam wall.

Not only did we go inside the dam wall, but we then rode around to the top of the dam wall, where we stopped and popped some champagne in memory of a fellow rider who passed away just the month before. Then onto our chalets for some r&r before supper.

The next morning again an early start, all the way back through the 600 bends and turns to the Ficksburg border post, back to Clarens for lunch at Rotar Hahn. Then back to Villiers and Johannesburg. We arrived back home at around 4pm on Sunday afternoon with lots of memories and photos of an amazing trip with amazing people. New friends have been made and new experiences shared.

The Living Room

Type: Restaurant

Website: https://www.livingroomjozi.co.za/

The living room in Maboneng is an urban rooftop garden oasis in the city. This beautiful restaurant is situated on the 5th floor of Main Change Building in the Maboneng Precinct. For lively music, great specialty food and a great vibe book a table at this social venue.

The Living Room has a great view over Jozi and you can enjoy some sundowners and cocktails as you watch the sun set over the city skyline.

Food is fresh and tasty, we had the crispy chicken pasta bowl and the duo of mini beef burgers. There is a variety of finger snacks, tapas, wings, fries, and bites. We thoroughly loved the restaurant and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fresh hip new hangout.

Arbour Cafe and Courtyard

This great little cafe is situated in Birdhaven just behind the Wanderers stadium. It looks very small and only a few tables, but when you walk through the restaurant and up the stairs past the kitchen, you got out into a courtyard where there are a number of tables outside

We had a tasty breakfast and it was freshly made with a great cappuccino. Service was fast and friendly and we had a good morning ride through Greenside and Rosebank through the streets lined with large green oak trees. We just love the tranquility of this ride.

Rooftop Cafe

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.rooftopcafe.co.za/

We visited Rooftop Cafe this morning on our weekly Saturday breakfast run. We were a bit concerned being the only customers there, but as we ordered another couple came in and by the end of breakfast there were another 2 couples.

Remembering that this is the quiet week between Christmas and New Year and most people have vacated Johannesburg for the sea. It was a pleasant morning as it was slightly overcast and being a rooftop restaurant this was the ideal weather to enjoy the outdoors and great meal.

We tried something different as we always do the standard English breakfast, but this morning we tried the French toast and was pleasantly surprised by the presentation, the flavours and the price. This was probably the best French toast I have eaten anywhere. We had to meet and compliment the chef.

I do love doing these breakfast runs each Saturday we try and visit and experience a new place each week. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of this blog you will see the list of 65 places we have been to so far. Click on the name and read about the place and our experience of it.

We visited Morrell’s this morning for breakfast and was blown away by the service, the venue, the grounds and the food. If you are looking for excellent service and a beautiful garden, be sure to try out this restaurant.

The chef prepared our breakfast from scratch in the kitchen right next to our table so we could observe him and felt like he was our very own personal chef as there were no other customers in the restaurant.

This was a unique experience and a tasty well presented breakfast that has taken this restaurant experience to one of our top ten.

La Boqueria

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.laboqueria.co.za/

We popped in at La Boqueria Restaurant for a Thursday evening dinner, because they are not open for breakfast. They open 11am – 11pm and so we thought let’s give them a try on a quiet midweek night. As we pulled into 3rd Avenue in Parktown North, the road was full of cars from the top right down the road for about 500m and all the side roads were full too.

On finding parking and taking the long walk up the road to the restaurant, on arrival we were informed the restaurant was fully booked for the evening, but also fully booked for the next 2 weeks. We asked if we could sit at the bar and wait for a table, the hostess kindly agreed but warned us it could be a long wait.

The bar was full and we found a seat on a couch, settled in with a drink and just soaked in the atmosphere and pure vibe inside the restaurant. We soon became aware that this was clearly a hot spot and droves of people flocked here for a social night out of good food and friendship.

2 hours later we were shown to our table and settled in for some steak and queen prawns. The food did not take long to be prepared and the waiter was extremely aware of our every need. He observed that we began to share our food and immediately returned to the table with another steak knife for my wife. Small details not often observed in other restaurants, most waiters you need to ask for this and that and then wait to get it.

Service was outstanding. The food was chef quality. The atmosphere created inside the restaurant was homely and welcoming. No wonder they are fully booked every night of the week, for the next 2 weeks.

Try something new, get out of your comfort zone and frequenting the same places. We are creatures of habit and go to the same malls, the same shops, the same restaurants and follow the same route to work each day. I say, get out and explore, you never know the new amazing adventures that await you.

Moyo at Zoo Lake

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.moyo.co.za/moyo-zoo-lake/

We popped in at Moyo at Zoo Lake this morning for breakfast. We were pleasantly surprised by the mere size of the restaurant and realized they are also a function venue for staff parties, weddings, and birthday parties etc. They have a few function halls and different sized rooms to cater for various sized groups. They also have a large marquee tent outside which also seats various sized groups.

Breakfast was great with a breakfast buffet this morning at R119 per person eat as much as you like, is well worth it. They also offer a full al a carte menu.

After breakfast we took a walk around the lake and many groups were already arriving to set up picnic and braai spots on the grass. This looks like a great place to just chill for a Saturday afternoon braai or picnic.

Clementines

Restaurant in Clarens

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.clementines.co.za/

We took a ride through Vanderbijlpark, Sasolburg, Heilbron, Reitz and Bethlehem to Clarens for a weekend away. We rode through quite a big storm at Heilbron, but the bike with its Road and Rain setting handled well. When we pulled off to put on our rain gear the storm moved over and we just hit heavy rain and wind.

We heard about Clementines from a few friends as the place to eat at when in Clarens. So although we were staying at the Golden Gate Hotel some 15 kms out of town, we took the ride through to go check it out.

On arrival, a sign met us at the front door. Fully booked, seat only available after 19:45

Which was a good sign, informing us that the food was great, the people love the place and this was the place to be. So we sat at the bar and waited half an hour for a table to open up.

We were shown to our seat and were surprised by the noise in the restaurant. Everyone talking, laughing and enjoying a good family meal, I don’t think we saw anyone sitting on their cellphones last night. This is a family restaurant with great hearty food that just encourages talk, laughter and enjoying the company of those you having dinner with.

We both ordered the oxtail, slow cooked for 3 hours and the meat just fell off the bone. This was a delicious meal that I would recommend to all who venture out to Clarens and dine at Clementines. After dinner the chef came out of the kitchen to speak to patrons, what a nice touch, and a great way to end the evening.

It was then time to get back on the bike and head back to our hotel.

The Culinary Table

Type: Restaurant, Deli and shop

Website: http://culinarytable.co.za/

“Where we believe in starting each meal from scratch.” This unique restaurant situated at the Lanseria Centre on Pelindaba Rd, grows all their own fresh produce on the grounds, this gives this restaurant its unique edge. We took a 30 minute ride out The Culinary Table this morning and was shocked to find this beautiful gem right on our doorstep. The outside building is very deceiving but the ambience inside is homely, friendly and inviting.

The breakfast was fresh, looked great and tasted even better. The menu offers some unique options and is well priced for the quality of food. The waiters were all extremely friendly and eager to serve and the restaurant was quite busy. Although it was our first visit to The Culinary Table it was obviously a very popular destination.

We took a walk through the garden to see the fresh produce being grown, and then checked out their deli and kitchen shop before heading out for a trip through Muldersdrift back home.

This was a great experience and one we would definitely tell our friends about and do again in the near future.

10 Bompas Hotel and Winehouse

Type: Hotel and Restaurant

Website: https://tenbompas.com/

We took a chilled 20 minute ride from Honeydew to 10 Bompas in Dunkeld West this morning. When we arrived here we were pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the staff and the grounds are beautifully laid out.

We decided to sit outside next to the pool, and you become aware of the peace and serenity of the place, just the sound of birds singing and the running water of the pool fountains.

Breakfast was served in true chef quality, with attention to detail presentation and quality of food. We thoroughly enjoyed being spoilt this morning and have been made to feel like honored guests.

The venue also has function rooms for parties, conferencing and team building events. The Winehouse also gives this venue a unique feature and the grounds transform into a magical place at night.

The weather was cool and slightly overcast making the ride out to Harties today pleasant. It is always good to be out on the bike and in nature, rather than being in the city.

Humble Harry’s

We visited Humble Harry’s restaurant at Leaping Frog centre in Fourways today. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff are extremely friend, and the food is tasty and fresh.

We took my dad out for breakfast this morning, so it was great to spend some family time with him today.

The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. A great venue to just relax and enjoy a great meal.

Velmore Hotel

4 Star Hotel

Type: Accomodation and Restaurant

Website: http://velmorehotel.co.za

We came across this hotel on one of our breakfast runs around Hartebeespoort and made a note to return and try try it out. The hotel has huge grounds, a few conference venues and a beautiful spa. The building is unique with old rustic designs and the water features add to the ambiance and give it character.

The interior of the hotel has beautiful luxury finishes and we were thoroughly impressed by the food in the restaurant. Normally food in all hotels buffet style is cold, unappetizing, bland and tasteless. We asked if they had an a la carte menu, but to our surprise the buffet was delicious, warm and inviting. The hotel also offers a relaxing bar area with indoor and outdoor seating.

We took a walk around the gardens and found the pool area is designed specifically for weddings and events.

The Potato Shed

At Newtown Junction

We decided to venture into town today to this hip new venue in the heart of Newtown.

The vibe is amazing, the setting is perfect and the food is exceptional. Trying out the Calamari, Chilli corn and the Red beef burger. We are even trying the Soweto Gold – Gogo Ginger Ale, first for us and absolutely loving it.

I would highly recommend a trip to Newtown and to pop in at the Potato Shed for a bite to eat.

The Kitchen Bar

We came to a local restaurant today at Design Quarter in Fourways.

This is a really great restaurant with a great menu and a great vibe. The staff are friendly and efficient and the food is generous and delicious.

Great outdoor and indoor seating for all occasions, and with 520 seats available it makes this restaurant one of the biggest in the country. We came on a breakfast run this morning and ordered a traditional breakfast and a KB Bacon Rosti breakfast. The portions were large and very tasty.

They offer an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything in between. Their platters are also a great alternative and a great selection of platters and cocktails are available.

Le Meridien Hotel

Ile Maurice ~ Mauritius

Type: Accommodation

Website: http://www.lemeridien-mauritius.com/

We did not visit this one on our BMW R1200GS Adventure, but we celebrated 25 years of marriage here this week and I thought of sharing our experience with you.

Beautiful beaches and sunsets that are out of a magazine… this is really what it looks like here, no photoshop or trying to make it look better than what it really is.

On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by hotel staff that immediately make you feel welcome and offered us a welcome cocktail while they completed the necessary documentation.

Then we were upgraded from a deluxe room to an executive suite, not sure if this was because we are celebrating a very special anniversary. (25 years) We were very surprised and happy for the upgrade.

Nothing can beat a dinner right on the beach with the sound of waves right by your dinner table. The food is signature style quality in look and taste and all the staff are so friendly and helpful, nothing is too much for them or too much bother.

Day 1: was spent getting to know the resort, unwinding at the sauna and reading a book while it rained it the late afternoon. The perfect start to a very relaxed and peaceful break.

Day 2: we decided to take a scooter ride out to Grand Bay, so although it is not on my BMW, the scooter option was a lot of fun and we blended in with the many locals using their small 125cc motorcycles.

Day 3: was spent doing water sports and enjoying the sun, beach and cocktails.

Day 4: we decided to travel a bit further out on the scooter to explore more of the island.

Day 5: we are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary on a catamaran cruise. I will post a separate blog just on this special day.

Day 6: we will be relaxing once again at the sauna, reading a book and winding down.

Day7: we head back to South Africa

Below are some pictures from this beautiful island, walks on the beach and our time here in Mauritius.

Espresso Caffe Bistro

In Parkhurst

Type: Restaurant

We have tried something different this week and found this awesome European style cafe along 4th Avenue in Parkhurst. It has a great vibe, great food and friendly staff.

There are a number of small boutique style shops, cafes, bistro’s, pubs and restaurants along this short stretch of road, giving it character and unique atmosphere. People walking their dogs stop by for a drink before continuing on their journey.

A great place for a breakfast or light lunch and supper in the early evening.

At Monaghan Farm

Situated on Monaghan Farm behind Lanseria Airport is the most spectacular hidden paradise called Fresh Farm Fusion restaurant. This feels like a piece of paradise was dropped off for us to use in the middle of the dry winter bushveld.

A great atmosphere and great food at Farm Fresh Fusion makes this the ideal spot for a family lunch or a peaceful breakfast with your partner. I love the outdoor set up and outdoor feel you get indoors. Service was fast, food was fresh and the price was just right.

Monaghan also offers plots for sale for farm style living just a mere 20 minutes outside the city. With excellent security and plots from 1,500sqm to build your ideal home on in the country with Curro private school on the farm – makes for an enticing offer. This beautiful place is only 45 minutes outside of Johannesburg and a great ride out. We went through Muldersdrift, towards Hekpoort and then across to Magaliesburg. The morning air was cool and refreshing, signs of Autumn air fast approaching. On arriving at Magalies Manor we went straight to the restaurant for a buffet breakfast.

Staff were extremely friendly and service was outstanding. After breakfast we took a walk through the grounds and had a look at the facilities and various accommodation available. The grounds were well laid out and the pool looked inviting.

Mount Grace Hotel and Spa

Type: Accommodation and Spa

Website: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/jnbmg-african-pride-mount-grace-country-house-and-spa/

We took a ride out to Magaliesburg this morning to African Pride Mount Grace Hotel and Spa. This beautiful 5 star hotel is nestled away in the Magaliesburg mountains, a mere hours ride out of Johannesburg.

We were completely surprised by this beautiful hotel almost hidden away in the mountain and trees. We were escorted to our breakfast table, and offered a warm cappuccino and glass of ice cold water and lemon. Restaurant Twist was an awesome experience and well worth the R255 per head charge for a full buffet breakfast.

After breakfast we then asked reception to show us around the rooms and the spa. We were escorted around the grounds by Billy in a golf cart. There are over 120 rooms on the grounds ranging in price from R2 200 for a Garden room to R4 500 for a Superior room per night.

We were super impressed by the Spa and this would definitely be something we need to try out in the near future.

Leave your stress in the city and emerge from this oasis of tranquility refreshed in body, mind and spirit. There is an outdoor heated jacuzzi, a hydrotherapy garden, floatation pool, steam room, gym and a number of treatment rooms.

This is definitely a place to relax and forget about all your worries.

The Windmill

The Windmill Restaurant

Venue: 1 Jan Smuts Rd, Hartebeespoort

We took a 45 minute ride out to Harties to this unique Dutch styled restaurant at the Windmill. We were pleasantly surprised by the place and service was fast and friendly. Management are hands on and walk around ensuring guests are happy.

We had breakfast which was delicious and then took a walk around the gardens. The gardens are beautiful and there are benches under some of the trees to just sit and relax and enjoy the outside summer air.

Heather sat on the grass and we just chatted about life and our future and where we would be in 10 years or 20 years from now… would we bring the grandkids to all these interesting places that have been to?

There is a Waffle House underneath the Windmill restaurant and there is a market across the parking lot. Lots to see and buy and a great day out if you are looking to get out of the city.

Irene Dairy Farm

Type: Farm and Restaurant

Website:http://www.irenefarm.co.za/

We took an hour ride out from Johannesburg to Irene to visit this 122 year old farm with working dairy. The farm is beautifully laid out with gardens, restaurant and cattle shed making this an authentic and unique experience.

There are 2 restaurants to choose from ‘The Deck’ and ‘The Barn’, and a farm shop to pick up some tasty treats, and unique bits and bites. Fresh milk is sold by the bucket load giving one a real farm experience with cows, tractors and the fresh farm smells.

We sat outside under the trees in ‘The Barn’ restaurant and ordered the farmhouse breakfast. The service was fast and friendly and well worth the trip.

‘The Deck’ is an indoor restaurant and overlooks the wishing well. This was nice ride out to a great family restaurant, with many kids playing on the grass lawns in the summer sun.

The Venue Country Hotel

Type: Accommodation and Restaurant

Website: http://thevenuehotel.co.za/

We visited this beautiful place this morning and were pleasantly surprised by the peaceful setting. It is a hotel and Conference venue, but the restaurant offers a great dining experience too.

Lucky for us the morning that we arrived there were no other guests or conference delegates so we had the entire place to ourselves. We were treated like royalty with the waiter and chef preparing a table and food just for us.

The grounds were peaceful and beautifully green from the recent rains. After breakfast we took a walk through the grounds to the pool and had a look at the facilities, conference venue and breakaway rooms.

The Venue Country Hotel is on the R512 Pelindaba Road on your way to Hartebeespoort Dam just before the Lion and Safari Park.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Cradle Moon Game Lodge

Type: Restaurant and Lodge

Website: https://www.cradlemoon.co.za/

We were pleasantly surprised by this gem  right on our doorstep, literally 15 minutes ride from where we stay in Honeydew. You enter the game lodge through a security gate and then ride up this short potholed road up the hill that doesn’t look very promising, but as you come over the rise a lush green paradise nestled in a valley opens up before you.

We made a reservation for breakfast outside at the pool. We were shown to our table and ordered our coffees. What a beautiful setting, with a number of rondavels spread out under the trees and some zebra, giraffe and buck roaming free on the grounds. Breakfast was a buffet with anything and everything to eat. What a spread. After eating our fill and enjoying the outside summer air, we decided to take a walk down to the lake.

To our surprise we walked around to the dam wall and found the most beautiful falls. Water gushing over the dam wall after all the rains we have had lately was a sight to behold. We then sat on a bench under the trees and chatted about how lucky we are to experience these beautiful places in nature.

Blos Cafe

Type: Restaurant and Conference venue

Website: http://bloscafe.co.za/

We heard about this amazing restaurant from Byron and Jean (work colleagues) and decided to take a look. It was a beautiful early morning ride through to Pretoria East and we can already feel the early morning air is cooler than it was a few weeks ago. Is winter fast approaching?

The restaurant has a warm country feel, with a veggie garden out front growing all kinds of fresh herbs and veg. Once inside you only then witness the long wooden deck that extends the entire length of the restaurant outside with a backdrop of indigenous trees.

We sat outside on the balcony.

Service is fast and friendly with a number of waiters awaiting your orders. The menu was extensive and caters for just about everyone’s taste from a hearty full breakfast, to Banting options, fruit and muesli and even if you just want a coffee.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Standard Blos breakfast, everything was prepared fresh and tasty.

Next time you are looking for an outdoor peaceful restaurant where you can sit, relax and enjoy the company around a great meal, try Blos Cafe.

Riverstone Lodge

Type: Restaurant and Lodge

Website: http://www.riverstonelodge.co.za/

We came across this beautiful lodge and restaurant in Muldersdrift. It is literally 20 minutes ride from our place, right on our doorstep but completely overlooked. So today we took a ride out to check it out and we were not let down at all, in fact we were rather impressed.

Cyclists use this venue on a Saturday as there starting point to cycle along the quite outlying roads along the Cradle. So hundreds of cyclists descend on Riverstone Lodge and it is quite a sight. But venture down to the Restaurant for some great food, service and venue.

There is indoor and outdoor seating on the balcony overlooking the Crocodile River. The interior is cool and spacious with tables and couches to relax on with an ice cold beer or cocktail.

We were even more impressed with our waiter Fernando who was a hotel school student, what a fine young man.

All 51 rooms are spacious, modern and beautifully laid out to ensure a peaceful restful stay. Check out this venue if you want to try something new and fresh.

Die Ou Pastorie

Beautiful old house set in a garden under the trees

Type: Restaurant and guesthouse

Website: http://www.dieoupastorie.com

This beautiful house is situated in Skeerpoort, just 45 minutes ride from Johannesburg. We came through Muldersdrift and Hekpoort, turned right at the t-junction towards Harties.

The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, but we chose to sit outside under the trees. It is so peaceful and quiet for breakfast, that we just sat there for an hour or two chatting. The breakfast was great and service was fast and friendly.

We came here in July, so it was right in the middle of winter, scarves and jackets to keep warm and the trees were brown. But this place must be beautiful and green in summer. The owner was telling us that they also have live entertainment on most Saturday’ but to check their website for details.

‘Musical concerts, art exhibitions, historical storytelling and performance art take place while guests dine under the trees, absorbing both the intricacies of the show and the tranquil beauty of their surroundings. Notable performers to visit Die Ou Pastorie include legendary South African musicians Steve Newman, Guy Buttery, Arno Carstens, Greg Georgiades and Dan Patlansky.’ – website

Pretville

Pretville town set in the 50’s

Type: Museum town

Website: http://pretville.co.za

We took a 45 min ride out to Pretville in Harties. This little town is set in the 1950’s and brings back memories of Grease, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. There is a gate charge to enter and then you walk down this gravel road to another era… vintage cars and old barber shops.

There are small replica shops that are set out like they were back in the old days, an old hardware store, pharmacy, police station, bakery and restaurant all set at a moment in time, almost frozen in time.

This little town has a real restaurant that you can sit down and enjoy a burger and coke and feel like you are transported back to grease lightning and John Travolta… the black and white floor tiles and red seats are indicative of this era. You just want to break out in dance and do the jive.

We took a 45 min ride out to Rustig this morning it is located about half way between Hekpoort and Hartebeespoort Dam. The main house, is set against the picture perfect background of the Magaliesberg, there is also a stone house, farm house and luxury tents all form part of the accommodation found at Rustig. There is a large dining hall that can be used for functions and weddings and a communal swimming pool.

We sat on the long veranda and enjoyed the view of the mountain range in the distance, with a cool breeze blowing on this warm summer morning.

We ordered an ice cold water with ice and lemon and then had a look at the menu. We decided on the English breakfast with a cappuccino. The breakfast was delicious and at a reasonable R50 per person.

We just sat and spoke about Christmas, the holidays and our 25 year wedding holiday we are planning to Mauritius in September 2017. The sound of birds singing in the background makes this place a very ‘rustig’ place to relax and chill.

After breakfast we took a short walk around the beautiful gardens, to check out the various accommodations and was pleasantly surprised by the rates. Check out the website for more details. Below is a picture of the tented camp.

The Big Red Barn

Family Restaurant and activity centre

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.thebigredbarn.co.za

We took a 45 min ride to The Big Red Barn in Olifantsfontein. This restaurant has transformed an old barn into a beautiful farm styled restaurant with a cycling track and adventure farm with Acrobranch.

The restaurant has a good selection on the menu and they have smaller private tables but also larger family type tables where anyone can sit and socialize. There is a nice atmosphere created and a buzz that is inviting and interesting. The food is also very appetizing and service is fast and friendly. Definitely a place to visit again with the family.

We took a 40 minute ride through Muldersdrift and Hekpoort towards Hartebeespoort Dam, to Mokoya Lodge this morning. It was a cool ride as it was overcast and a cool wind was blowing. We turned off onto a dirt road and followed the signs to Mokoya. What a beautiful, peaceful little lodge situated along the Magalies River. We ordered breakfast and sat outside on the terrace with a nice cup of coffee and muesli and fruit. Then we got our breakfast , bacon, eggs, beef sausage, beans and toast. They have their special Mokoya chili sauce which was tasty and not too hot.

We had to try out their hammocks under the trees after breakfast.
We took a walk around the lodge, down to the river and the function lapa. There is a volleyball court on beach sand and a swimming pool for some fun in the sun. There is also a boma down by the river for those warm summer evening socials.

The boma looks beautiful at night with all the candles and fire.

Clifftop Exclusive Lodge

Clifftop exclusive safari hideawayType: Accommodation
Approx cost: R4,200 per person per night
Website: http://clifftoplodge.co.za/
This premium exclusive lodge is situated 3 ½ hours from Johannesburg in the Malaria free Welgevonden Private Game Reserve in the Waterberg Mountains.
Clifftop Exclusive Safari Lodge is a special place where service is exemplary and luxury is evident. We had to leave our vehicle at the main gate parking and was picked up by the owners in a Land Rover as the road leading up to the main lodge was too steep and rocky.

Each cabin is perfectly positioned along the cliff overlooking the Sterkstroom River to offer exclusivity and privacy. Each cabin has its own splash pool, outside deck and outside bed for those long summer nights.
We were introduced to our very own butler who would look after us for the weekend, he served us dinner in a private setting at the main lodge. We felt like royalty as the other cabins were all fully booked, but we didn’t see any of the other couples. Each couple was served the 3 course dinner in their own private setting at the main lodge. Quite extraordinary and exclusive and romantic all at the same time.

The next morning at breakfast was the first time we managed to see that there were in fact other couples staying over the weekend. (the price includes all meals and game drives) After breakfast we headed on the first game drive of the morning and came across a number of animals including, Lion, Rhino, various buck, zebra, giraffe and a troop of Elephants.

We were looking for Leopards on our game drive but these shy animals avoided being detected, hiding in the rocky outcrops. Out of sight to the untrained eye. The weekend was most relaxing and enjoyable. We got our fair share of game viewing, relaxing, privacy and 5-star service and food. Before we knew it the weekend was over and we were being driven back down to the main gate for our 3 hour trip back to Johannesburg.

The food is well prepared and there is a large selection and variety to choose from. Waiters and waitresses are fast and friendly and always willing to assist.

Dinner on the first evening of arrival was set up outside around the boma with dancers and entertainment for the guests. What a way to start the weekend.

Day 2: Game drives early morning and late afternoon are a must while at Mabula in order to get the full experience. There is no better excitement than waking up at 05:30am to go on the 06:30am game drive. Coffee and a simple bush breakfast is offered with warm blankets on the vehicle during a cold morning ride.

It barely feels like you get back and morning tea and snacks is served, once done some relaxation around the camp site or at the pool and pool bar area. Then before you know it, the lunch buffet is ready. Didn’t we just eat? Time to eat again and then you can take a stroll down to the stables for a horse ride or quad bike tour through the reserve. On returning then it is time to get ready for the afternoon game drive. To see the lions feeding or elephants up close and personal. On returning from the game drive it is time for supper around the Boma once again. Day 1 done.

You can go on another game drive the next morning or just relax around the reserve. After lunch it is time to pack up and leave. This was truly an unforgettable weekend away with the kids. I highly recommend it if you want to see wild animals of prey in their natural habitat and surroundings.

French toast koffee kafee

A small piece of France in Harties

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://frenchtoastharties.co.za/

We heard about this beautiful little French styled restaurant from a friend and decided we need to go check it out. As my dad was visiting us from Cape Town we decided to rather take the car this time, and spoil him on a morning outing.

French Toast has a small Eiffel Tower in the grounds which gives it a real French appeal. Seating is available inside the Kafee or outside under the umbrellas. There are some ducks waddling around under the tables and some beautiful odds and ends which make this a unique destination. There is a padlock bridge, European bicycles and deco art pictures and paintings around the restaurant.

The breakfast was enjoyable and I even tried a Eggs Benedict for the first time, it looked and tasted so good. Company was enjoyable and as always dad had his witty jokes which kept us all laughing.

Stonehaven on Vaal

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.stonehaven.co.za/

We took a 45 min ride out to Stonehaven on Vaal in Vanderbijlpark for our breakfast run. The restaurant is set alongside the Vaal River and features indoor or outdoor seating. On a nice summers day it is ideal to take advantage of the outdoor seating where mini gazebos are set up on the grass bank overlooking the Vaal river. This is a beautiful setting on the green grass bank, and if you are lucky you will see some sporting activities like water skiing, jet packs and jet ski’s also pass by from time to time.

stonehaven-2

We enjoyed it so much at Stonehaven a few weeks later, we took my dad there for breakfast . (Not on the bike, we went through by car)

Stonehaven restaurant offers fast friendly service, but they also serve a great breakfast at reasonable prices. Well worth the ride out.

Other attractions at Stonehaven, they offer boat cruises, Sunday lunch cruises and sunset cruises on the Vaal River. This has also become a very popular wedding venue.

While we were there we took a walk-about on the boat while it was docked.

There are also some benches along the waterfront to relax on, a swimming pool, a jungle gym for the kids to play on and a small petting zoo to see some farm animals. Fun in the sun for the whole family.

Budmarsh private lodge

Budmarsh 5 star private lodge

Type: Accommodation and restaurant

Approx Cost: R4,000 per room per night

Website: http://www.budmarsh.co.za/

We took a 40 minute ride out to Budmarsh private lodge situated in the heart of the Magaliesberg. They offer  5-star accommodation and conference facilities in a country styled setting. This makes it the ideal venue for weddings, conferences and team building events. Or alternatively if you just want to come through and book a private picnic outside under the trees.

Guests can relax around the swimming pool, take a walk, or play some snooker, but this place offers the ultimate in quiet, peaceful tranquility and 5-star service.

We did not stay over but asked to view the  rooms, 3 room types are available at Budmarsh – Luxury, Superior and Superior Suite. (prices are available on their website) We did enjoy their breakfast outside on the patio. It was such a pleasant morning. After breakfast we went for a walk around the complex and the grounds.

It was then time to get on the bike and head out. South Africa vs Australia rugby game was coming on later the afternoon and I was already kitted out in my rugby jersey to support the bokke.

Harties cableway

Type: Cableway and Restaurant

Website: http://www.hartiescableway.co.za/

We took an hour ride Past Lanseria to Harties and decided to check out the cableway. We both come from Cape Town and have been living in Johannesburg for the past 8 years now and we didn’t even know Johannesburg has its own cableway. On arriving at the base station we were excited to see the smaller cable cars and surprised by how many were going up and down constantly.

We waited in the queue, bought our tickets and moved up the ramp to the entrance of the base station. The queue moved quite quickly and before we knew it we were shuffled into the moving cable car and the doors closed behind us. We were off… The cable car picks up speed to start its ascend against the Magaliesberg, ‘this is a World Heritage Site, known for its natural beauty and rich heritage. Its lush vegetation and picturesque valleys make it a popular escape for residents of the nearby cities, Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is also a popular wedding destination and boasts a number of hotels and spas.’ – website.

But my wife was not interested in Heritage site or the lush vegetation and picturesque valleys as the wind picked up slightly and the cable car began to sway gently in the wind. “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh” was heard most of the way up. I suppose it depends on which side of the cable car you are seated, either ascending facing forward or backward how you will experience it. I was facing backward and had the beautiful view of the Hartebeespoort Dam as we ascended, it was magnificent.

On arriving at the top base station, once again the doors open and you need to shuffle out while the cable car is still in motion. Hurriedly we are getting out while other customers are on the other side waiting to get in.

There is a beautiful wooden deck on top with a restaurant, curio shops and look out posts. I was quite surprised and immediately thought about the effort it must have taken to bring all this equipment up to build it.

The views from the top are spectacular and definitely something everyone should at least try once.

We then took a walk around the walkway and this lead us to a large open area on top of the mountain where there were more little rest areas, an ice cream kiosk  and another restaurant. They had some trampoline jumping activities and music was playing. We bought an ice cream and got into one of the colorful old cable car booths that are used as stalls to sit in and eat or just relax in and reminisce about when these were used as the cable cars in the good old days.

After spending about 2 hours on top it was finally time to leave. My wife was not keen on the trip down and was still nervous from the trip up, but this time she faced forward descending and had the beautiful view of the dam on her way down. The wind had also subsided which helped and we met a German couple which sparked a conversation about their holiday in our beautiful country. Before we knew it we were at the bottom, once again quickly being shuffled out of our car.

A beautiful day in the sun doing something new and interesting and now it was time to head back home on the BMW R1200GS Adventure.

Whispering Oak Garden Cafe

Whispering Oak Garden Cafe in Cullinan

We took a nice 2 hour ride out to the small mining town of Cullinan just on the outskirts of Pretoria. On arriving in the small town it is immediately evident of the sole dependency of the Cullinan mine. There are quite a few touristy type attractions, like the mine tours (above and below the ground tours) and the many quaint, little restaurants and curio shops.

The place to be is definitely all happening in Oak street. But don’t take the ride out to Cullinan and then not experience riding through the town and the rows of beautiful trees making an archway of greenery.

We stopped at Whispering Oaks garden cafe, 94 Oak Street, Cullinan for breakfast. They have a homely seating arrangement outdoors under some lapa’s and big sun umbrellas.

The waiters were fast, friendly and engaging. The food was warm, freshly made and scrumptious. (sadly we have come to realize that not all places serve fresh food, and they compromise taste for speed) It is never good to do this as you chase your customers away.

A restaurant we have been to has this tag line above the door ‘the food will be remembered long after the wait’ I personally would rather wait an extra 10 minutes for freshly made eggs than eat a rubbery egg that has been heated up 3 times.

We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast and then walked through a few of the curio shops. There is a nice ‘vibe’ in Cullinan with live music playing at the one outdoor restaurant, an artist was painting at the one restaurant and lots of old antiques and things to see…

Take time out of your busy schedule to give this small mining town a visit.

Lethabo Estate

Lethabo Estate accommodation and restaurant

Type: Accommodation

Approx cost: from R850 per person per night

Website: http://lethaboestate.com

I was flying out of Lanseria airport and the plane banked to the left to turn towards the south (Cape Town flight) I was sitting at the window and saw a number of dirt roads that I thought myself and my wife could explore on the bike. On arriving in Cape Town I immediately went onto Google maps and started looking for a place we could to ride to on the bike. I didn’t find anything but thought we would go and explore anyway.

That Saturday we got on the bike and headed past Lanseria and took the dirt road just after Kromdraai Road. We went exploring and found this gem on the banks of the Crocodile River just behind Lanseria airport. We pressed the buzzer at the gate and was let in by a very friendly voice on the other end who came out and welcomed us after we parked.

The friendly staff member showed us around the restaurant but due to the fact that we did not have a reservation, we unfortunately could not have something to eat there. But the place looked so beautiful and private that we immediately made a reservation for Sunday lunch. We then asked about the accommodation and was shown some brochures of the rooms, and this is when we fell in love with Lethabo.

Lethabo offers the most private accommodation along the banks of the Crocodile river, with private outdoor areas, picnic spots and beautiful views. This is the ultimate weekend getaway for you and your partner to just relax and enjoy the time alone. Each room is designed to give you ultimate privacy and luxury with indoor and outdoor features for those hot summer nights and cold winter days.

We came back for our lunch reservation on Sunday and was treated like we were the only couple for lunch. Exclusive pampering and a table set out on the deck just where we requested it. Drinks were served and we literally felt like the entire spread was set out just for us. Private picnic spots are also available to be booked along the river bank or set up under the trees. This really was a special treat and one we will recommend to friends and will definitely return to again.

Beestekraal

Beestekraal stasie restaurant:

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://www.beestekraalstasie.co.za

We took a ride through Hartebeespoort and Brits to Beestekraal stasie. This is a nice hour and a half ride out of the city into the country. Great out ride for biker groups, below you can see BMW Pretoria group that went on a breakfast run one Sunday morning.

image

We love going on a breakfast run every Saturday morning. Each week we look for a new interesting place to visit and enjoy a great breakfast.

Beestekraal Stasie has converted an old train station into a restaurant and old  country store, this restaurant offers freshly made food from local produce. The speciality of the restaurant is definitely the condense milk coffee, well worth the ride just to try it out.

Cradle Restaurant

Cradle Restaurant:

Type: Restaurant

Website: http://thecradle.co.za

We found this restaurant tucked away at the back of the Cradle of Humankind on the Kromdraai Road to Lanseria. You enter through a gate to the game lodge and ride up a dirt road to a parking lot and then the restaurant sends a golf cart to fetch you and take you down the side of the hill to the restaurant.

We enjoyed a hearty breakfast with a beautiful view of the valley and the game reserve from the long balcony of the restaurant. Waiters were friendly and professional and found this to be quite a treat, as it was not too busy.

Askari

Askari game lodge and spa:

Type: Accommodation and Spa

Approx cost: R1430 per person per night

Website: http://askarilodge.co.za

We found this gem by absolute chance. We were just out riding through Muldersdrift and Hekpoort when we came to a t-junction in the road. Left to Magaliesburg or right to Hartebeespoort, we decided to go left. About 3 kms down the road we came across a large Askari Game Lodge signboard and decided to take a look, we have never been allowed in at game lodges before as the bike is either dangerous or noisy. We got to the main gate and asked if we could go in as we wanted to go for breakfast at the lodge. To our surprise they allowed us in.

imageSo we took the ride up to the main lodge, on the way we were able to see many buck, zebra, giraffe and we even saw 2 elephants drinking at the watering hole. WOW what an experience our first viewing on the BMW GS. We got up to the lodge very excited and talking about this unique experience not knowing what else Askari has to offer.

image

We were then shown where the restaurant and spa was situated. We were taken back in time to the Voortrekkers with the Ox wagons surrounding the restaurant. They also have an old museum in a barn with numerous old wagons and carts.

The breakfast was a delight at R225 per person for a full buffet and we sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the view. We only realized afterwards that this was a very popular wedding venue and couples select Askari to get married at because you can have your photos taken with these beautiful huge elephants. They also have a nice selection of accommodation available from self catering, to garden cottages and deluxe suites. Check out the Askari website for details.

Forum Homini

5 Star hotel and restaurant

Type: Accommodation & Restaurant

Approx: R4 450 per night

Website: http://www.forumhomini.com

We heard about this restaurant from a work colleague and decided to take a look. We arrived at the main gate to the game reserve at Letamo and was informed that you need to make a reservation for the restaurant. This was disappointing but as it was our wedding anniversary celebration we decided to make the reservation for the next week-end.

We received email notifications of our booking and confirmation of payment. On Saturday we then took a second ride out to Letamo game reserve and this time on arrival at the gate our names were on the list. We entered the gate and took the 1.5 km ride down a dirt road to the restaurant and hotel. On arrival it is hidden in the long grass and you would think you are at the wrong place, but clearly marked signage guides you to reception.

The restaurant is built on a small dam and is private and secluded. The waiters and staff are 5 star and professional, and the food is master chef quality. The start of our 5 course breakfast dining experience started with some orange juice, and date yoghurt with sesame and sunflower seeds. Heather and myself looked at the menu and said to each other ‘Kingklip and Venison’ for breakfast? This was confusing as there was no bacon and eggs on the menu. An elderly couple sitting near us were clearly not happy that they could not have bacon and eggs. We decided that this was something we have never done and wanted to explore something new and unique.

Presentation was a work of art on a plate and the combinations of seeds, paste and veggies worked well together. Bringing a taste explosion in your mouth that left you coming back for more. Each portion was exactly what was needed to get to taste each individual item but well balanced to bring it all together.

After breakfast we were pleasantly surprised by a little dessert presented to us to celebrate our 24 year wedding anniversary.

image

We then went for a short walk around the hotel and was shown the Presidential Suite at only R5 500 per night you get a beautiful spacious room with a lounge and kitchenette, indoor and outdoor double shower, indoor jet bath and outdoor heated splash pool in your own private garden. This is definitely something to try for the next special event to celebrate.

Then we were back on the bike and took a further hour long ride around the game reserve and witnessed a number of animals on the reserve, zebra, springbok, gemsbok, wildebees and eland.

Beetleloop

Beetleloop Guesthouse in Nelspruit:

Type: Guesthouse Accommodation

Approx: From R490 per night

Website: http://www.beetleloop.co.za

We have found this guesthouse about 8 years ago and built a friendship with the owners Rina and Piet. Whenever we travel to Nelspruit, Beetleloop is our accommodation of choice. We planned our first long distance trip from Johannesburg to Nelspruit on the bike. We did not want to go on the highway and planned the route through a number of small towns to Nelspruit.

We left Joburg at around 11am and travelled down the N17 past Springs to Bethal, where we stopped for a short water break. Then along R38 to Hendrina where we stopped again for some snacks and energy drinks. We continued along the R38 through Carolina and Badplaas to  Nelspruit. Riding down through the mountains into Nelspruit was beautiful, even after a full day (5 hours) on the road.

This was a unique experience spending the whole day riding with Heather on the back and talking together on our Scala Rider kit brings us closer together as a couple.

What a relief to get to Beetleloop and see Rina waiting for us. She gave us our special honeymoon suite that we always book. The beds are enormous and comfortable and this evening seemed to invite us.

imageThe hospitality is friendly, warm and like family. Breakfast in the morning is always professionally presented and extremely tasty. We absolutely love staying here… There is also so much to see and do in and around Nelspruit, Hazyview, Sabie, Graskop and Pilgrims Rest.

Check out the local maps for things to do locally.

Brauhaus am damm

German restaurant on a dam:

Type: German restaurant

Website: http://brauhaus.co.za

On Saturday morning wanting to venture a bit further out than our normal local distance we decided to visit this restaurant. It is approximately 130kms from Johannesburg – about an hour and a half on the bike. This was a refreshing ride through Muldersdrift, Hekpoort and Magaliesburg on route to Rustenburg.

We ordered a German styled breakfast with Bokwurst and was served by a warm, friendly waiter. The atmosphere is uniquely German with a beautiful view of the Oliefantsnek dam and the Magaliesburg mountain range behind it. It was a warm morning so sitting outside on the terrace under the umbrellas was refreshing and pleasant.

“Indulge in sumptuous German fused meals while exploring our beers on offer.

At Brauhaus am Damm we have taken the utmost care to ensure you experience pure relaxation accompanied by warm and welcoming hospitality.” – website

Well worth a ride out to take a look and explore this unique restaurant.

Black Horse

Type: Restaurant

We took a scenic ride out to Magaliesburg through Hekpoort and stopped at Black Horse Restaurant for lunch. Set under these enormous Pecan Nut trees on a terrace overlooking the Magalies River, it is the perfect setting for afternoon tea. They also have a small flea market with items on sale and a craft beer distillery.

“Black Horse Estate offers an artisanal craft brewery & distillery as well as a quaint restaurant. Black Horse has a magnificent banquet hall for weddings and conferences with in-house catering and a variety of accommodation. The brewery is just an hour’s scenic drive outside Johannesburg and is situated on the edge of the Magalies River with lush green fields and majestic black horses.
